Please help us by collecting the complete installation logs with this tool:
After you run Collect.exe, you'll find the file vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory.
Please upload the file to a public site, like SkyDrive, and post the link here.
After that, uninstall the .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile, then...
Were you using the web installer or the standalone installer?
For future attempts, please use the standalone installer, found here:
Before your next attempt, clean up from the failed install with this tool:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx
Reboot, clear your %temp% directory (yes, delete everything.), disable your AV software, then run the standalone installer "As Administrator.

Here is an excerpt from an answer from Andrew Wu in a different thread (link below) that may help you:
Therefore, you might need to repair the Windows Update service:
Please try the steps in the article below:If above things don't help then follow below:
1. Run cmd.exe with Administrator rights (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type:
sfc /scannow2. Run Readiness Tool: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
If still no avail, I would suggest you to try Windows Update forum. I believe that Windows Update experts might be helpful on your concern.
